Ayrshire woman set for 'really exciting' opportunity to run with Commonwealth baton

An Ayrshire woman is getting set to be part of the Commonwealth games.

Sarah King, of Kilmarnock, will be part of the baton relay for the Birmingham games which kick-off later this month.

The Kilmarnock Rugby Club committee member bagged one of 10 spots from her employers, PwC UK, who are a sponsor of the games.

What makes it even more special for Sarah is that she may get to hold the baton in her hometown of Preston.

She told the Kilmarnock Standard: “I’ve never experienced anything like this before, and I’m actually the only person in my team picked based up in Scotland.

“I am not doing it in Scotland which I’d have liked, it’ll be in the North West of England.

“I haven’t got my confirmed location yet, it’ll be Blackpool, Preston or the Lake District.

“I was actually born in Preston so to go back there and do it would be really nice, it would make it even more special.

“It’s really exciting, I didn’t think in a million years I’d be selected as there’s just so many people who applied, I am very proud.

“I was delighted when I heard the news, it’s a real honour.

“I work with PwC who are sponsoring the event, we were given 10 baton spaces - but there’s over 28,000 people in the company, I was lucky enough to get one of those spaces.

“I know it’s a rigorous ordeal trying to get a space, so I am really grateful.

“Obviously the fact I am heavily involved at the rugby club too, it’s nice to get publicity for the club too."

Sarah added: “I’m a committee member, I’m also in charge of looking after the kids from around P1-P7.

“I help out with a bit of everything, it’s a big focus for me.

“My son plays at the club too, so I’m just trying to get as much as I can for the club.

“It’s all about the football in Kilmarnock, so getting a bit of publicity for the rugby club is really good.

“This is where we wanted to push, I’ve done a couple of marathons for charity pushing the club’s name, I do a lot to try and get the name out there."
