Ayrshire seaside restaurant set to undergo makeover with 15-metre wide canopy

An Ayrshire restaurant has been granted permission to undergo a makeover.

Owners of Ropes Bar, in Harbour Road, Maidens, are being allowed to erect a canopy and glazed screens to the rear of their business.

Once complete, the rear of the property should give patrons shelter from the coastal elements while adding to their dining experience.

The business overlooks Maidens Bowling Club.

Several years ago, the building operated as a public toilet before being transformed.

In 2019, Ayrshire Live told how South Ayrshire Council’s licensing board granted the owners permission to sell alcohol at the premises – despite objections from residents who were mainly concerned about noise, policing and dangers of drunks in the harbour.

Now the owners want to add to the restaurant’s reputation by adding the 15-metre wide canopy.

A report into the application stated: ”The application site relates to a former public convenience located at Harbour Road, Maidens, which has since implemented an earlier planning permission to operate as a café/bistro.

“The building has a roof clad in slate and external walls finished in dry dash render.

“The building is located within the settlement boundary of Maidens and is within an area of open space as identified in the adopted South Ayrshire local development plan.”

The council said the application could be granted as it “will not have an adverse impact on the character or amenity of the locale.”

The canopy, which comprises powder-coated aluminium and glazing, will reach a height of approximately 2.6m, a depth of approximately 3.8m – from the rear building line of the property – and extend approximately 15.6m in width."
