Ayrshire police have devised a clever way of identifying where underage kids are buying booze.
Cops have partnered with East Ayrshire Council for the scheme that aims to reduce the amount of alcohol youngsters are getting their hands on.
And 35 off-license premises in and around Kilmarnock have agreed to take part in the scheme that will see bottles of booze marked.
This will allow officers to know where to concentrate their patrols.
Inspector Iain Farmer reminded members of the public that buying alcohol for people under 18 can result in a £5,000 fine, up to three months in prison or both.
Inspector Farmer added: “This launch provided a reassuring message that the police, local authority and the licensed trade are keen to reduce the amount of alcohol being purchased on behalf of young people in our community. This will help us minimise the significant risk and vulnerability of young people under the influence.
“I wish to remind members of the community that purchasing alcohol on behalf of a young person carried a fine of up to £5000, a prison sentence up to 3 months, or potentially both.
“We are pleased to launch this partnership scheme in preparation for our summer campaign, which will see police and partners work together to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer period for all of our communities.”
