Ayrshire foodie event at Blackthorn Salt to feature pasta, cheese, chocolate and Hendrick's Gin

Families and foodies are in for a treat next month as some of Scotland’s leading brands will tantalise taste buds and quench thirsts at a unique one day only pop-up event.

The award-winning team at Blackthorn Salt in Ayr are hosting the Big Day Out at Blackthorn on Saturday, April 15, opening their grounds to an array of artisanal culinary delights from across the country.

Food fanatics can whet their appetite on the west coast with demos, tastings and treats galore - with any profits being donated to The Trussell Trust Food Banks.

There will be savoury offerings from Galloway Pasta, The Koji Kitchen Miso and Narture Bread making.

Butter-making and bakes will also be featuring, fresh from Mossgiel farm, alongside tasty chutneys from The Glasgow Pickle Company, spicy sauces from Edinburgh’s Trodden Black and natural soaps from Flora Brae.

A BBQ and fire pit will be brought to you by Comrie’s Beetroot & Chocolate Ltd and for those with a sweet tooth, sample delights from Arran Dairies ice cream and Bella Chocolate.

Overtone craft beer will provide refreshment, supported by Bullish Coffee and the gourmet food truck Papamacs.

An expert panel of leading foodies- including Blackthorn’s Master Salter Gregorie Marshall; Master Distiller at Hendrick’s Gin Lesley Gracie and nutritionist and chef Sonnda Catto- will discuss methods, tips of the trade and shopping sustainably.

Steven Lamb- author, chef, fermenter and curer at River Cottage- will be hosting the discussions.

And music will be provided by Ayrshire Youth Fiddle Orchestra and a young piper.

Visitors to Blackthorn- who have featured on TV on The Hairy Bikers Go Local- will learn about the natural methods undertaken at the world’s only working thorn tower and pan house, and can enjoy a demo with traditional salters, making salt the old way.

Blackthorn Salt is made using 100 per cent West Coast sea water and nothing else. There are no illusions: no adding, no seeding, no bleaching, just pure Scottish sea salt.

Gregorie Marshall, whose family has been involved in all things salt for five generations, said: “We can’t wait to throw open the gates at Blackthorn– it isn’t often we get the chance and this time we wanted to broaden the experience and make it all-encompassing, with wee pockets of fun, flavour, and interest for everyone.”

Whirly Marshall added: “Whatever your taste buds prefer- hot or cold, sweet, salty, or savoury- come rain or shine we hope to welcome many people to enjoy some of Scotland’s finest tastes in this wonderful location and business we’re very proud of here in Ayrshire.”
