Ben Dempsey insists life at Somerset Park is bringing out the best football of his career.
The Englishman bagged his third goal in five games as Ayr United saw off the challenge of plucky Pollok in the Scottish Cup on Monday night.
They were made to grind out the win against the West of Scotland league battlers, who belied their position in the footballing pyramid.
But former Charlton kid Dempsey believes it was all part of a mature performance.
He said: “We knew what type of game it was going to be and we had to be patient.
“But it was all about going through to the next round and we did that.
“When the only goal went in it was a sigh of relief and we were able to relax a bit.
“I was disappointed to only get the one goal because I had a couple of other chances and got myself into some good positions.
“Playing with Bangala in the middle allowed me to get forward a bit more and luckily I was able to take one.
“I set myself a target at the start of the season to get as many goals as I could – if I could get double figures then brilliant.
“I’m taking it game by game and if they keep coming then that will do me.”
Dempsey has established himself as one of the first names on Lee Bullen’s teamsheet since his summer move north on a three year deal.
And he added: “I’m loving it – it’s the happiest I’ve ever been playing football.
“I’ve got a bit of freedom living away from home, living by myself away from my parents and growing up a bit.
“Back at home in London I’m used to my dad cooking me dinners every night, so it’s been a change, but I’m really enjoying it.
“Ever since I came up on loan last season, the manager has shown so much faith in me and knows what I’m capable of.
“I go on to the pitch confident already because of that."
