Ayr United are set to be awarded a 3-0 win and maximum points — after Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup opponents Elgin City fielded an ineligible player.
The Honest Men drew 0-0 with the Highlanders at Somerset Park, but won the penalty shootout 4-3.
Under group stage rules both teams are awarded a point for a draw, but the game then goes to a penalties — with an extra point up for grabs.
However, it now appears that Elgin defender Darryl McHardy came off the bench while he still had a suspension to serve.
It means the League Two side will have to forfeit the game and United will be registered an automatic 3-0 win — and three points — on Thursday, at an SPFL disciplinary hearing.
A statement from Elgin City FC said today: “We have been charged with breaching SPFL Rules and Regulations and the SPFL have arranged a disciplinary hearing for Thursday, July 14.
“We included Darryl McHardy in Saturday’s Premier Sports Cup Group F game against Ayr United at Somerset Park when the player was subject to a one-match Scottish FA suspension in the competition.”
Elgin City’s general manager Keiran Carty has apologised for the administrative blunder.
He said: “I’ve got to hold my hands up for this one being my responsibility.
“I would like to apologise to all supporters, players, management and staff as I know how hard everyone worked to get the result at the weekend.
“I know the outcome on Thursday will be a 3-0 loss for the Club.”
As a token gesture Carty is offering to “personally refund” all travelling supporters who made the weekend journey to Ayr.
