Ayr United boss Lee Bullen hails derby heroes as Honest Men down Kilmarnock

Lee Bullen wants his players to use their Ayrshire derby joy as a platform to finish the season in style.

The head coach watched his Honest Men run out deserved 2-1 victors at Rugby Park after a classy second-half display.

And he believes the win over bitter rivals and cinch Championship title favourites Kilmarnock can act as a pivotal moment in their campaign.

Bully said: "We got our just rewards tonight. They say every game is just three points but this is different.

"For the supporters, for the mindset of the players – it's so, so big.

"There was a fantastic atmosphere during the whole game and it's an amazing night for everyone concerned with the club.

"The fans have been outstanding and with us the whole way but this is almost a thank you to them.

"The performances have been decent the last few games but we just haven't been taking our chances.

"Kilmarnock probably shaded the first half tonight but we really grew into it and, let's be right about it, we've missed a fair few sitters at the end.

"We could have won it 3-1 or 4-1 in the end and it's credit to the boys for the way they've trained all week towards this game."

James Maxwell's deft flick cancelled out Fraser Murray's opener as both sides traded early goals.

Then United took control after the break and their pressure paid off when Paddy Reading rammed home a clinical half volley to send the away support wild.

Bullen added: "The boys will take real confidence from this but that can't be it for their season – they have to buy into it and realise they're good enough to kick on now."
