An MSP has called on residents to take on board life saving gas safety advice during an awareness week.
Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown has urged constituents to take important steps after witnessing the horrific impact a gas blast had on a community.
The SNP politician spoke during Gas Safety Week which ran from September 12 and September 18.
She told MSPs about the devastating effects of the Gorse Park explosion during a debate in the Scottish Parliament.
Ms Brown is now urging residents to take note of the Gas Emergency Number and share it with family and friends to be used if anyone can smell gas.
Ms Brown said: “The people of Ayr know all too well about how dangerous gas can be. Last year the community of Kincaidston was shaken by a horrific gas explosion that destroyed homes and resulted in a family of four being hospitalised.
“The residents of Kincaidston and the people of Ayr came together to provide support and help recover. I again call on authorities to listen to the people of Kincaidston and work closely with them. Lessons must be learnt, and questions must be answered.
“Although Kincaidston was an accident, it does demonstrate the devastating effects of gas if it is not treated with respect.”
The call comes after shock details emerged from a report by HSE into the explosion on October 18 last year.
Ayrshire Live first told how the explosion caused by a corroded pipe which lay underneath the home of Number 3 Gorse Park.
A full report was then released in an FOI by HSE which revealed leaks poured out of three holes on the main service pipe into the injured family’s home.
Ms Brown added: “Gas safety is important all year round, but Gas Safety Week is a reminder for us all about the measures we can take to help protect ourselves.
“We should take note of the Gas Emergency Number, 0800 111 999, and share it with our family and friends. You should call this number if you smell gas. In addition to this, you should make sure to have your gas appliances serviced and safety checked every year. It is a small step that can save your life.”
