Ayr's biggest primary school celebrates its 90th birthday

Ayr’s biggest primary school has marked its 90th birthday with a playground party.

Pupils and staff came together to celebrate the milestone anniversary with a series of events.

Classes held parties and enjoyed cake before the big celebration in the playground, which included a concert staged by former pupil, Scott Nicol.

The Prestwick musician played a number of songs to keep the children and staff entertained and ensured the party went with a swing.

Past pupils have sent in photos which are displayed in the school corridors, while a time capsule was buried with letters from pupils and copies of their monthly newspaper.

Log books kept by past headteachers from 1931 until 1995 have also provided a historic feel.

Pupils wrote letters to their future selves explaining how it feels to live through a pandemic and their thoughts and aspirations for the future. The school also purchased a commemorative bench and planted a Cherry Blossom tree.

They were visited by ex-pupils and staff and special guests, including Tom and Isobel Brown, parents of the first visually impaired pupil to attend a mainstream school in Scotland.

Headteacher Gaenor Hardy said: “I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher at Heathfield Primary and EYC.

“Reading through the log books has been interesting, inspirational and humbling at the same time.

“We are proud of our pupils and our strong community and this has been a time for reflection of the past, appreciating what we have now and hope for the future.”
