Mourners have been told they could face reburying loved ones in a different cemetery – if they don’t want them to return to waterlogged Ayr.
Shocked relatives say they have been offered up options as far afield as Tarbolton or Annbank as an alternative to placing bodies back into underground concrete tombs, which have become flooded.
A group of furious families told Ayrshire Live how they have been informed that they would not be able to choose an earth burial in soil at Ayr Cemetery as there are only 60 spaces left.
In another twist to this ever-growing crisis, council bosses have met with families and offered up burial sites up to nine miles away.
Speaking to Ayrshire Live at Ayr Cemetery, Debbie Kennedy – whose brother Jamie Kennedy, 46, has been buried since 2020 – said: “They have asked if they want to move my brother to another graveyard.
“They suggested do we want to move them to Tarbolton or somewhere else? No, that doesn’t work – we paid for plots here.
“My mum wants us all to be together.”
Jennifer Craig, whose sister Joan Craig, 55, is buried at the cemetery said: “This is what you are getting when you meet with them on person or over the phone.
“They are showing no compassion.”
Council chiefs remained tight-lipped when asked about other cemeteries.
A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: “Options are being discussed with families and where possible we will accommodate their requests.”
