Ayr Gold Cup 2022 results plus winners and placings in full

Summerghand won the Virgin Bet Ayr Gold Cup at odds of 12/1 for David O'Meara and Scots-born jockey Danny Tudhope. Khanjar was sent off as favourite for the pot but he could never land a blow and it was David O'Meara's evergreen eight-year-old that was to land the spoils when staying on from off the early pace.

Winning rider Danny Tudhope told ITV Racing: "He's an absolute star and each way he provides us with lovely winners and he's done it again this year. David (O'Meara) does well with these sprinters and keeps them sweet. Usually we get slower ground but he thrives on this sort of ground and I had a feeling he'd run a big race as he's been running well lately. He needs a bit of luck in running really but once you get it right...he delivers the goods."

The winner saw off Commanche Falls who ran another spectacular race under top-weight with Juan Les Pins a never-nearer third.

With the sun out and the stands at Ayr full - the Scottish Grand National saw a restricted crowd of 15,000 attending - all were out in their finery and the crowd saw performances to match.

Gweedore started off the day in style for Borders trainer Katie Scott and he kept on well to post a 12/1 victory at the expense of the well backed pair of What's The Story and Revich.

Royal Champion bolted up in the Listed Doonside Cup and that was very much the story of the day for Roger Varian as the trainer had the golden touch with his runners across the country. That emphatic success in that Listed event being followed by an equally emphatic performance in the Ayr Silver Cup by 14/1 chance Dusky Lord.

Richard Fahey is no stranger to winners at the track though Barefoot Angel was one that slipped the net for punters and she obliged in the Firth Of Clyde Stakes at odds of 20/1 as the well backed favourite Queen Me could only muster third.

Mick Channon made the raid from Lambourn worthwhile in the Nursery as Metal Merchant defied an absence to land the spoils at 12/1 as the well-backed favourite Animate was only fourth.

Abduction made it a winning debut for Jim Goldie in our penultimate contest but the favourite backers were to get the last laugh as Aimeric made full use of every yard to seal the nightcap and register an across-the-cards seven-timer for Roger Varian.
