Aymeric Laporte provides Man City injury update before Newcastle United fixture

Aymeric Laporte has provided an encouraging injury update on social media before watching his Manchester City teammates get down to business against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm).

Laporte, 28, was a shining light for the Premier League champions last campaign. However, after struggling with a knee problem, the Spanish defender underwent surgery this summer.

In his absence, City have recorded back-to-back wins over West Ham and Bournemouth as they get ready to visit Newcastle on Sunday afternoon for their latest Premier League fixture. Laporte is not yet fit enough to return, but there appears to be welcome news regarding his recovery after being ruled out until September.

Speaking about the centre-back last month, manager Pep Guardiola said: "Laporte is injured. He had surgery after the last few games when he made an incredible effort.

"He's looking really well, but we have to be careful because it was a knee. He needs time and I think he will be out for August and then maybe he will start to be with us in September."

With attentions fixed firmly on the Magpies, former Athletic Bilbao player Laporte has now been training on grass and posted an update on social media. Uploading several pictures on to his Twitter account, he addressed 614,700 followers with a short caption: "One step closer."

Laporte, who signed for City in a €65million deal four years ago, has played 154 matches for the club with 12 goals and four assists. During that time, the Spain international - who switched allegiances from France before Euro 2020 - has won four Premier League titles, as many League Cups and the FA Cup in 2019.
