Axing of F1 race director Michael Masi was ‘harsh’, says Red Bull chief Christian Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes it is “harsh” that Michael Masi has been removed as F1 race director.

The move was made by the FIA last week in the wake of an inquiry into the controversial end to last year’s World Championship, which saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen pip Lewis Hamilton to the title on the last lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi.

Masi failed to correctly apply the rules in a late safety car period and now two men will alternate in his role, while officials will also provide further help.

But Horner told talkSPORT this morning: “It’s a difficult one. It’s the FIA’s business.

“I think it’s harsh. I think that he was in a very difficult position last year. We felt a lot of decisions went against us last year.

“When you look at what he has in terms of resource, compared to what the teams have, it’s such a massive, massive difference.

“I think it’s good to hear they are bringing in things like VAR equivalent and they are bringing back one of the most experienced guys, Herbie Blash.

“I just think there was so much pressure put on the removal of Michael and that’s not right. That was my personal feeling.”
