Reality TV drama doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling, and Married At First Sight Australia is no exception. Awhina Rutene and Adrian Araouzou’s relationship was a rollercoaster during the show, but their post-show friendship proved to be even messier. In a candid interview, Awhina revealed why she decided to block Adrian on every platform — and let’s just say, it sounds like she had plenty of reasons.
While the two tried to maintain a friendship after the show ended, things quickly went south. “I blocked him on almost every platform possible,” Awhina said to PEDESTRIAN.TV, confirming she’s officially done with Adrian.
According to Awhina, she initially kept the connection alive to support Adrian, knowing he would struggle with the backlash from viewers. “I knew he would struggle, especially when the audience met him with such hostility,” she explained.
But despite her efforts to be kind, Adrian didn’t exactly make it easy. “There was still zero accountability when he was rewatching it way back and going, ‘Hey, maybe my behaviour was poor,’” Awhina said.
Instead of reflecting on his actions she said Adrian deflected blame onto her.
“It was always like, ‘You, you, you,’” she added. At that point, Awhina realised she couldn’t help him anymore. “Awhina, you can’t help this man… You need to just cut him off; he doesn’t deserve your kindness anymore.”
Awhina also revealed that Adrian repeatedly crossed boundaries even as a friend. “I tried establishing boundaries… and he kept crossing those lines,” she said. The apparent constant disrespect left her feeling drained and unappreciated.
“No matter what you do or how you help him, you’re always going to be the bad guy.”
To make matters worse, Adrian allegedly attacked her character online to make himself look better. “For him to look better, he always needs to attack your character,” Awhina shared. After enduring this behaviour for too long, she decided enough was enough and blocked him completely.
Reflecting on their post-show friendship, Awhina admitted it felt one-sided. “It was more like me supporting him… but there wasn’t anything in the friendship for me,” she said. Despite trying her best to offer kindness and support, Adrian’s actions made it clear that the relationship wasn’t worth holding onto.
Now that she’s officially closed this chapter of her life — she’s even declared this her “last-ever interview” about the show — Awhina is focusing on herself and moving forward.
“I went straight back to work, I went back to my family… I just want to go back to my normal life,” she said.
Despite all the drama (and let’s be real — there was a lot), Awhina did walk away with some solid friendships. She’s particularly close with Jamie [Marinos] and Beth [Kelly], two fellow cast members who’ve proven they’re more than just reality TV allies. “Even when this is all done and a lot of these friendships dissipate because they were situational, I know with them it won’t,” she said.
As for others (cough Siera [Swepstone] cough), Awhina isn’t losing sleep over faded connections. “We don’t have a friendship,” she said matter-of-factly about one former co-star. “I just don’t have time for people who don’t add value to my life.” And honestly? Good on her.
