A Rhondda pub has been named one of the best at the annual Great British Pub Awards. Hundreds of businesses from across the UK competed for the 2022 titles, with the Valleys establishment taking home the Community Hero award.
Four Welsh pubs were shortlisted for the awards, including Community Hero and Best Sustainable Pub, but the Lion Hotel in Treorchy was the only Welsh business to take home a prize this year. The business won the Community Hero award at the ceremony, known as the 'Oscars' of the pub industry, which took place in Manchester on Tuesday, October 4. The award, which was sponsored by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, was given to owner Adrian Emmett.

In a Facebook post sharing a picture of the award, The Lion Hotel, said: "We couldn’t do it without our fantastic community, thank you all for supporting us." The pub is at the centre of the town which has previously been awarded the UK's greatest high street and was visited by the now King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla earlier this year. The Lion Hotel is also known for taking part in community events, repurposing as a shop during the pandemic and working with local schools on book exchanges and other projects. It has previously been named the Best Partnership Pub and Best Sports Bar in Wales at the Great British Pub Awards in 2017.
The other Welsh nominees at this year's awards were the Castle Inn in Monmouth, shortlisted for the Best Sustainable pub for their team's efforts include planting more than 2,000 trees. Under the breweries' categories, The Romilly in Canton, Cardiff, was shortlisted for the Best Marstons Pub of the Year and Porthmadog's Red Lion was shortlisted for Best Admiral Taverns Pub of the Year.
