Award-winning Scottish climate activist launches climate podcast

A NEW podcast hosted by award-winning climate activist and PhD student Laura Young is shining a spotlight on Scotland’s leading climate researchers and their work.

The SAGES Climate Science Podcast launched this week and features 11 episodes covering environmental topics like rising sea levels and climate resilience.

The series is produced by the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (Sages) and aims to connect the public with expertise on tackling climate change.

Young, known online as Less Waste Laura, is completing a joint PhD with Abertay University and the University of Dundee.

She said: “Our goal with the podcast is to cut through the noise of misinformation and bring science to the forefront. Scotland is home to world-leading research and incredible scientists working on solutions to the climate crisis.

“This podcast connects the public to their work, providing clarity and inspiration at a time when action is more important than ever.”

Young's academic work focuses on enhancing Scotland’s resilience to climate change through community engagement, and she has also represented Scotland internationally at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in 2024.

Experts from both universities also play a key role in the podcast.

In episode two, Dr Rebecca Wade discusses the effects of rising sea levels and extreme weather, while in episode eight, Dr Andrew Minto examines how Scotland’s underground resources can support sustainable energy solutions.

The podcast launched at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI) with policymakers and scientists at the event.

The Scottish Government has supported the podcast as part of its broader commitment to engaging the public in climate action.

Alasdair Allan, acting minister for climate action, said: “Public support for climate action is crucial if Scotland is to achieve net zero by 2045 and become more client resilient.

"The series will help listeners build a better understanding of some of the complex issues around climate change and provide insight into what action people can take to help cut emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.”
