Award-winning Greater Manchester chippy named among the best in the UK

An award-winning chippy in Prestwich has been named among the best in the whole country. Chips @ No. 8 has been listed in Fry magazine’s annual top 50 for the third year running.

Fry magazine is the chip shop industry’s key publication, with a place in its top 50 among its highest honours. Chips @ No. 8 had two mystery diner visits, where judges visited the shop anonymously and rated it on everything from cleanliness of the premises to staff knowledge and professionalism to social media presence.

Owner Dan Edwards said: “To make the list three years running is an incredible achievement and is just reward for the team here who are consistently delivering not only great fish and chips but really fantastic service too. They are an amazing group of young people and I’m very lucky to have them here.”

Reece Head, competition organiser, added: “Once again we’ve had another year where it’s simply got harder to operate a fish and chip business, with rising energy, labour and ingredient costs taking a heavy toll.

“It’s not easy but operators are working harder and smarter, staying ahead of changing tastes and behaviours and adapting accordingly. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Chips @ No.8 on being one of the UK’s 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways.

“They are pushing forwards while not losing sight of what makes the chippy so engrained in British culture - high quality, value for money food with great customer service and inviting surroundings.”

Other Greater Manchester chippies also made the list this year, including Sykes Fish and Chips in Pendlebury, The Fish at Goose Green, in Wigan and Pennington Plaice in Leigh. Off The Hook Fish and Chips in Sale also got a slot.

The news comes after Chips @ No. 8 was rated in the top 20 in the Fish & Chip Takeaway of the Year 2023, the annual awards run by the National Federation of Fish Friers and dubbed the ‘chippy world cup’, narrowly missing out on a slot on the top 10.

Dan’s shop, which opened in 2018, is known as being one of the few chippies frying its fish and chips in beef dripping - though regular oil is available on request.
