Award-winning Glasgow brunch cafe Scran to close as owner teases next move

Glaswegians have been left gutted by the news one of the city's top brunch spots will soon close its doors.

Dennistoun's Scran cafe on Alexandra Parade is often namechecked as serving the best brunch in the city, while its mouthwatering breakfasts and excellent coffees have won them a host of top awards.

In 2019, Scran was a double winner at our Glasgow Live Best Places Awards, triumphing in the best coffee and best restaurant in the east categories.

It was also voted Scotland's Cafe of the Year at the Food Awards Scotland in 2021.

However, the cosy eatery - which opened in 2018 - will soon close its doors, with the last service scheduled for Sunday October 2.

But, it's not all bad news for fans of Scran and good brunch, with owner Chris Mears teasing his next move.

Sharing the news on social media on Thursday, he cited the 'simply unsustainable current climate' as one of the reasons for his decision to close.

He said: "So here's the post I've been putting off for as long as possible and dreading sharing with you all. I know it's going to upset a great number of our amazing customers and now dear friends. But it's with a truly heavy heart we're having to close our beloved SCRAN almost exactly 4 years since we opened that door.

"Believe us when we say we're as upset as you will be, but our hands are tied. There's so many reasons for this but there's no benefit in pointing the finger or blaming any one factor. The reality is it's a culmination of so many and the business where we are and in the current climate is simply unsustainable.

"Fear not though as we plan on opening back up in the very near future hopefully not too far away (East).

"Look on it as though we're simply moving home and we'll be going on a wee few week's holiday. The new SCRAN may be slightly different, but it will be better than before and full of the same personal touches, high standards and love you've all become accustomed to.

"Our planned last day of trade will be Sunday 2nd OCTOBER. (Not this weekend!)

"So until then keep showing us the unwavering love and support that's always kept us smiling.
It's been a blast. All our love. The SCRAN Fam."

A host of food and drink businesses across Glasgow have since showed their support in response to the announcement.

Radisson Red said: "All the best Chris and team! We’ll be down to your new venue ASAP! What a ride you’ve had! Best in the business!"

Sprigg commented: "Very sorry to read this, good luck and very much look forward to you coming back."

Meanwhile, Chulo's Cookies added: "We love you guys!!!!! Scran and Chulo’s wherever you go. Thanks for having us its been a blast."

Best of luck to Chris and the team on the next move!
