Hindi writer-poet Yatindra Mishra's biography of the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, titled ‘Lata: Sur-Gatha’, won the 64th National Film Award and the MAMI Award for Best Writing on Cinema (2016–17). And now celebrating the life and times of Lata Mangeshkar on her 93rd birth anniversary in 2023, the book is being published in the English language announced by publisher Penguin Random House India.
Titled 'Lata: A Life in Music', the book is translated into English by Ira Pande.
Yatindra Mishra’s decade-long conversations with the iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar resulted in his book ‘Lata: Sur-Gatha’, in which he explores the lesser-known life of Lata ji. "Lata di is an artist of global repute; it has been a real honour to see this well-loved and awarded book find new readers in English," the author said in a statement shared by the publisher.
Talking about translating the biography, Ira Pande said, "To translate Yatindra Mishra’s book while bringing forth the sweet purity of Lataji’s voice, her genuine humility and dedication to her music has been both a challenge and a joy."
The book has been by industry stalwarts like Gulzar, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shubha Mudgal, among others.
