Avril Lavigne will drop her new album, Head Above Water, on Friday, marking six years since her last release.
She said the album’s title and concept was inspired by her Lyme Disease diagnosis in 2014.
So far, fans have only had a small taster with a handful of songs released ahead of the full drop.
Here is everything you need to know about Head Above Water:
What do we know about the album?
It marks Lavigne’s first release following a fierce battle against Lyme Disease, which she has revealed sparked the creative process for her.
In an open letter on her website, Lavigne explained: “I’m in a battle. One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. [sic]
“I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something.”
She revealed she went on to fight the disease with antibiotics and “herbs” and battled with the weakness that came about as result of it.
She added that Head Above Water was the first song she had sung in two years, which turned out to be a positive for her vocal chords.
Lavigne also told how his album is the most “open” she has ever been and hopes she can inspire others through the music.
What songs will be on it?
Here is the track list:
- Head Above Water
- Birdie
- I Fell in Love With the Devil
- Tell Me It’s Over
- Dumb Blonde ft. Nicki Minaj
- It Was in Me
- Souvenir

Are any of the songs already out?
Yes! Lavigne released three songs ahead of the release this Friday.
She released the first title tack Head Above Water last year with a powerful message connected to her battle with the disease and included a link to her charity at the end of the video, which aims to help other suffers and support research efforts.
Two months ago she released upbeat ballad Tell Me It’s Over and earlier this week unveiled a collaboration with Nicki Minaj on Dumb Blonde.
What has she said about those body double rumours?
Any Lavigne supporter will remember the Melissa rumours which did the rounds in the 2000s.
Fans theorised that she had gotten fed up of being a celebrity and hired a body double to represent her at public events.
The rumours date back to 2005 and never really fizzled out with fans regularly bringing it up.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lavigne addressed the theory: “It’s just a dumb internet rumour and [I’m] flabbergasted that people bought into it. Isn’t that so weird?
“It’s so dumb. And I look the exact same. On one hand, everyone is like, 'Oh my god, you look the same,' and on the other hand people are like 'Oh my god, she died'”.
Where can I listen?
The album is expected to be available on Spotify and Apple Music on Friday, February 15.
