'Avoid the area' warning for famed Scottish tourist spot as vehicle comes off road

UPDATE: The road to the Skye Fairy Pools has now reopened, Highland Council has said.

VISITORS are being asked to “avoid the area” at one of Scotland’s most popular tourist destinations after a vehicle came off the road.

On Tuesday afternoon at around 3.11pm, the Highland Council put out the warning to anyone who may be looking to visit the famous Fairy Pools in Skye.

The single-track C1237 road to Glen Brittle from Merkadale has been closed, the council warned.

It said a vehicle had come off the road and a recovery operator was required as it urged people not to visit the area.

An estimated 200,000 tourists travel to the Skye Fairy Pools each year, with the single-track road from Merkadale being the only way to access them by car.

The Highland Council wrote on social media: “Road closed: C1237 between Merkadale and Glenbrittle due to vehicle off the road and recovery required.

“Please avoid the area.”

The council further tagged the Police Scotland Highland & Islands, NHS Highland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and Scottish Ambulance Service in its social media posts.

However, both the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Services said they had not responded to any call-outs in the area.

Police Scotland have also been approached for comment.

At around 4.45pm, Highland Council said that the road had been reopened.
