Average wait time for ACT street fixes is 52 days

Just under 70 per cent of the nearly 47,000 requests made to the ACT government's Fix My Street portal in 2021 led to the issue being fixed.

The portal - which allows residents to report issues such as potholes, malfunctioning street lights and trip hazards - received 46,831 requests in 2021.

Of those, 32,292 resulted in the issue being fixed by the ACT government.

The average wait time for an issue to be resolved was 52.2 days, but some issues may have been repaired immediately if necessary.

City Services Minister Chris Steel provided the information in answer to a question on notice in the Legislative Assembly.

"The time taken for an issue to be formally resolved via Fix My Street is dependent on several factors including: the need to engage with the correspondent who lodged the request to seek further clarification of the concern, seasonal variation in request volumes, redirection of resources to respond to emergency events including COVID-19 and storm events and more," Mr Steel's written answer said.

Mr Steel advised the Assembly in May last year that officers within the Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) Directorate addressed around 40,000 maintenance requests each year through Access Canberra, which included the Fix My Street portal.

"Ensuring public safety is the highest priority when triaging requests generated by the community. TCCS employs a team of skilled and experienced staff that assess requests based on need and determine the appropriate management action," he said in a written answer at the time.

"All programmed works are allocated a priority with a corresponding estimation of scheduled timing. However, additional unexpected works of a higher priority, such as storm events, can extend the period of time in which previously programmed works are undertaken."

In the 2020-21 financial year, there were 3297 pothole-related enquiries to online reporting tool Fix My Street, making it one of the most reported issues through the forum during the 12 months.

In total, the ACT government repaired 6375 potholes in 2020-21, compared to 2719 the previous financial year.

An ACT government spokesperson told The Canberra Times in August last year the potholes were caused by too much rain.

"Over the last year the [La Nina] weather system has created significant rainfall across the ACT. This has resulted in damage to the ACT's roads including potholes," the spokesperson said.

"June was the fourth wettest on record in Canberra for that month, and was followed in July by 19 days of rainfall, which is well above average."
