We knew it would emotional viewing but I don't think anyone expected it to be this emotional.
The much-anticipated Avengers Endgame has broken box office records and become a critical darling, but it also gave fans a few swan songs to contend with.
We already knew early on that this would be the film that Chris Evans hung up his shield as Captain America, but then the sequel to Avengers Infinity War came and left us with a cathartic but complicated ending.
Some fans and audience members will no doubt have a few questions regarding it, so here is why categorically the ending is not a plot hole and can be explained.
But warning, there are spoilers ahead.
*Spoiler warning for Avengers: Endgame*
Whether you have seen the film or not, we do ask that for others who haven't seen it and don't want to know what happens, Do Not Spoil The Endgame.
Avengers Endgame: Is Captain America ending a plot hole?
The conclusion of Avengers Endgame saw Thanos defeated after the Avengers time-travelled via the Quantum Realm to past time periods to obtain each of the Infinity Stones.
With each of them obtained, they managed to both undo the Decimation of half of the universe's population that Thanos caused, but also destroy the villain for good.
However, we learn earlier on in the film that events in the present are fixed and and constant and cannot be undone by changing past events - except if the all-powerful and necessary stones are not returned to their rightful time periods.
In one of the final scenes, Captain America/Steve Rogers volunteers to return the Stones and Thor's hammer Mjonir to their rightful time periods and promises to return in seconds after saying farewell to friends Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
Steve doesn't come back, though, at least not as they thought he would.
Marvel studios plans following Avengers: Endgame may have leaked online
Bucky and Sam notice a man sat on a bench nearby and Sam approaches him to find an elderly Steve.
Steve reveals he completed his mission but remained in the past and spent his remaining days with the woman he loved - Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
He then passes his shield and mantle of Captain America to Sam - with Bucky's approval.
But how is this possible if events in the present cannot be undone by time travel to the past?
Well, Steve had always been Peggy's husband, as mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when Cap visited her at her bedside as she suffered from dementia.
How Avengers: Endgame was foreshadowed by Avengers: Age of Ultron
The older Steve would have just been off-screen in this period, but two Caps were around at the same time but just at different ages.
Details about her husband were obviously kept under wraps for a reason.
So Steve had always gone back to Peggy at the end of his journey.
Enjoy their sweet slow dance as there is no plot hole here!
Avengers Endgame is in UK cinemas now.
