As Southern California experiences another week of high winds, authorities are cautioning residents about engaging in certain activities that pose a high risk during a red flag warning. A red flag warning, issued by the National Weather Service, indicates conditions that are conducive to the rapid spread of fires.

The combination of low humidity, strong winds, and a potential heat source can create a dangerous environment where fires can quickly escalate and spread.

Activities to Avoid During a Red Flag Warning:
  • Avoid outdoor wood-burning fires or leaving smoldering coals unattended after cooking outside. These can easily ignite surrounding dry vegetation.
  • Avoid mowing or trimming dry grass, as the machinery used can create sparks that may start a fire. It is recommended to postpone such activities until the red flag warning is lifted.
  • Do not park your vehicle over dry grass, as the hot underside of the vehicle can ignite the grass and other nearby vegetation. Park on paved surfaces whenever possible.
  • Exercise caution when disposing of cigarettes, especially while driving. Improperly discarded cigarettes can easily spark fires in dry conditions.

Authorities emphasize the importance of being vigilant and taking necessary precautions to prevent accidental fires during red flag warnings. It is crucial for residents to follow these guidelines to help minimize the risk of wildfires in the region.
