VISAKHAPATNAM: Temple authorities were shocked after seeing a cheque of Rs 100 crore without a date dropped in the Hundi (donations offering box) by a devotee.
They suspected something fishy and enquired about the cheque at the concerned bank and they received a double shock after learning that the devotee had only Rs 22 in his account.
The management of Sri Varaha Lakshmi Nrisimha Swamy Temple at Simhachalam famously known as Simhachalam Temple or Appanna Temple found the cheque on Wednesday during the Hundi counting.
A devotee named Boddepalli Radha Krishna (Account No. 8313295434) dropped the Kotak Mahendra Bank cheque in the Hundi. The cheque has become viral on social media on Thursday.
"We noticed that there was no date on the cheque and some corrections on it. We enquired and came to know that the devotee had an account in the Kotak Mahindra Bank branch in MVP Colony. He had only Rs 22 in his account. We do not know about the devotee’s psychological state of mind and his concept. We don’t know the devotee," the Assistant Executive Office (AEO) of Simhachalam temple Ramana Murthy told TOI.
The temple authorities said that this would not come under a cheque bounce case as the devotee had not taken any loan from the temple. He is offering the money to the God.
"We can’t put the date on the cheque. Generally, devotees would drop cheques by signing them with mentioning the date," temple authorities said.
During the Hundi Counting on Wednesday, the Simhachalam temple received Rs 1.79 crore, including Rs 10 lakh coins, for the past 16 days. Around 79.980 grams of gold and 10.100 kilos of silver were received as Hundi offerings from devotees.
