Authorities rush to save 230 whales stranded in Tasmania as experts fear over half dead

In a statement, the Tasmanian department of natural resources and environment said half of the animals appear to be still alive.

It added: "(The) stranding response in this area is complex. If it is determined there is a need for help from the general public, a request will be made through various avenues," it added.

The stranding comes after over a dozen sperm whales died at Australia's King Island.

This isn't the first time Tasmania has been the site of a mass stranding after it was the scene of the biggest beaching in Australia's history two years ago.

Nearly 500 whales were beached, with rescuers managing to save around 100.
