Author to release second dark comedy novel inspired by 'Dubliners' sense of humour'

A Dublin author is set to release his second novel as a follow up to his hit debut novel which has been optioned for a film or TV show.

Patrick Osborne is originally from Lower Gardiner Street in the city centre and later moved to Cabra. He now lives in Killarney, Co Kerry with his wife Liz.

Patrick is also trained horticulturist and his first novel 'Baxter's Boys' was released in 2020. It tells the darkly comic tale of a petty thief who is also a member of a dysfunctional football team in Dublin.

Now Patrick is gearing up for the release of his second novel dark comedy 'When Your Number's Up' which is out in August. Speaking to Dublin Live, Patrick explained that he was inspired by his fellow Dubliners' sense of humour for both his novels.

"I suppose [what inspired me] growing up in Dublin the sense of humour that people have, that kind of working class thing where you try to make fun of things to see the bright side or the lighter side of things. The situation of it is ordinary working class people in 'When Your Number's Up' the guy dreams of riches, he thinks money can solve everything but obviously it can't.

"He thinks money can buy him everything including love, and he's down on his luck. He loses his job, girlfriend and he decides to get this crazy idea from an older man on the streets who plants the seed 'why don't you rob a lottery machine' which obviously you can't just do."

Patrick described how things begin to "snowball" for his main character when his plan to steal the lottery machine goes hilariously wrong. "One of the reviews said it's like Misery meets Waking Ned in a Dublin newsagents so it's just madness, different people coming into the shop, how do you try hide it from the staff and gangsters and everyone gets involved.

"It's coming out at the beginning of August, the likes of Chapters on Parnell Street will stock it they've been a brilliant support. It will be on Amazon and Kindle as well."

Patrick added that a film and TV production company has recently made him an offer to buy the film rights for debut novel 'Baxter's Boys', which he says is "very exciting."

Patrick's first book 'Baxter's Boys' was released just before the Covid-19 pandemic and their Dublin launch was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic. "Covid shut down the country but kind of worked in both ways in that I didn't get it into the book shops I wanted but then in other ways a lot of people read it on Amazon and Kindle.

"And because of lockdown everyone was bored out of their heads so there was more people that sat down and read books during lockdown. I'll definitely have a Dublin launch soon for 'When Your Number's Up' it's in the Mansion House but the date is to be confirmed."

Patrick is also a guest speaker at the Dublin Writer's Festival which is taking place from September 15th-17th. Both his novels 'Baxter's Boys' and 'When Your Number's Up' are published by Orla Kelly Publishing.

'When Your Number's Up' is retailing at €14.99 and can be purchased at Chapters on Parnell Street, on Amazon and Kindle from next month.
