Author of Elon Musk-Endorsed Book Praised by Suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO Killer Responds:'You Missed the Point'

Author Tim Urban tweeted that “Very much not the point of the book" after social media users learned that alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer suspect Luigi Mangione previously praised his book. (Credit: @waitbutwhy/X; LinkedIn)

The author of a self-help book on the U.S. political environment said that the suspected UnitedHealthcare CEO killer missed the point after learning the alleged suspect previously praised his book.

After learning that Luigi Mangione, 26, was identified by authorities as the possible suspect who shot and killed CEO Brian Thompson last week, social media users wasted no time combing through his old posts to find clues themselves.

One of which was a tweet about Tim Urban's book "What's Our Problem?" from January, where Mangione wrote, "I believe this book will go down in history as the most important philosophical text of the 21st century."

However, after Mangione's arrest, Urban tweeted, "Very much not the point of the book."

Urban, who began the Wait But Why blog in 2013, wrote in a 2023 blog post following the release of his book that it explains "what I think is an existential risk to liberal societies and what I think we need to do to get to that awesome future I used to be so excited about."

"My urge to write about the future comes from an excited optimism that's fundamental to my personality. I believe at a deep level that the future is going to be an amazing, exhilarating ride, and nothing is more fun than learning about cutting edge developments that can offer clues into what magic might lie down the road," Urban wrote in the post.

The book, released in February 2023, was endorsed by Elon Musk, who simply tweeted "worth reading" at the time.

Police said Mangione was taken into custody Monday after a McDonald's worker recognized him in Pennsylvania. He was reported brought in on gun charges, but has not yet been formally charged in connection with the shooting death of Thompson, as reported by CNN.
