English author Neil Gaiman is facing even more allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual assault, after a new report in New York magazine spoke to eight of Gaiman’s accusers.
Known for his best-selling works like Good Omens, Coraline, The Sandman, American Gods and their adaptations, the first allegations against Gaiman emerged in the middle of 2024.
Gaiman denied the claims against him, with a representative of his saying some of them are “false, not to mention deplorable”.
The author of the New York piece, Lila Shapiro, states that she spoke to a total of eight women with similar recounts of Gaiman engaging in non-consensual encounters with them.
Of the women Shapiro spoke with, many of them first made public allegations in the podcast series Master: the allegations against Neil Gaiman. The six episodes focus predominantly on the claims made by Gaiman’s former babysitter Scarlett Pavlovich, whom Shapiro wrote about at length.
Pavlovich first met Gaiman in 2022 when his ex-wife Amanda Palmer asked her to babysit their five-year-old son at their property in Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Pavlovich had been friends with Palmer for two years, but never met Gaiman.
Pavlovich alleges on the day she first met the author he joined her naked in a bath without asking, and proceeded to assault her.
“The next part is really amorphous… but I can tell you that he put his fingers straight into my ass and tried to put his penis in my ass. And I said, ‘No, no.’ Then he tried to rub his penis between my breasts, and I said ‘no’ as well,” Pavlovich told New York Magazine.
“Then he asked if he could come on my face, and I said ‘no’ but he did anyway. He said, ‘Call me ‘master,’ and I’ll come.’ He said, ‘Be a good girl. You’re a good little girl.’”
Pavlovich also alleged an incident occurred at a hotel in February 2022 where Gaiman began to have sex with her while his son was in the room on his iPad.
After numerous other alleged instances, including ones where Gaiman would make the babysitter lick up faeces, urine, and vomit, Pavlovich says she confided with Palmer, who appeared unsurprised.
“Fourteen women have come to me about this,” Palmer told Pavlovich, per New York Magazine.
However, Pavlovich signed a non-disclosure agreement regarding her time babysitting, and Gaiman expressed he believed the sexual relationship was consensual.
In 2023, Pavlovich breached the NDA by filing a police report against Gaiman, and told police that Palmer would participate in the investigations — however she did not.
Shapiro’s New York report also spoke to other accusers who all shared similar stories of Gaiman engaging in BDSM-related acts, but crossing the consent boundary.
Two of them, who had not met each other, likened the author to an anglerfish that lures deep-sea prey in with light.
“Instead of a light, he would dangle a floppy-haired, soft-spoken British guy,” one said.
Following the initial allegations in 2024, many creative projects that involved the author were put on hold, cancelled, or altered.
The Amazon series Good Omens, which Gaiman was an executive producer on, had its third and final season changed to just a 90-minute episode after he left the production in October.
