Australian shooters hit target with nine Paris spots

Olympic shooting regulars Daniel Repacholi and Elena Galiabovitch have a fight on their hands to make it to Paris after they were upstaged with quota spots on the line at the Oceania Championships.

Australia earned two more quota spots as action wrapped up in Brisbane on Sunday, bringing their tally to nine Paris Games berths earned during the event.

Bailey Groves (232.7 points) beat five-time Games veteran Repacholi (232.2) on the last shot to take out the men's 10-metre air pistol and earn a quota spot in the process.

Two-time Olympian Galiabovitch was second in the 10m and 25m air pistol behind Dannielle Donohue and Siobhan Nicholls respectively.

Frank Morris (men's skeet), Aislin Jones (women's skeet), Elise Collier (women's 10m air rifle) and Jack Rossiter (men's 10m air rifle) also secured quota spots for Australia.

In Sunday's final events Scott Robertson's 25m rapid fire pistol victory earned an eighth quota spot.

Laetisha Scanlan (42 from 50) - fourth in the women's trap in Tokyo - then held off Catherine Skinner's late surge, hitting her last two targets to win by one and earn another quota spot.

Skinner had already booked a quota spot in the event at last year's world championships, meaning the pair will likely wear green and gold in Paris next year.

But that's not yet official, with performances earning Australia an Olympic entry and shooters forced to deliver again in selection trials early next year to punch their individual Paris tickets.

"It's a tricky one to prepare for; you don't want to think about it too much and overwork yourself," Groves said of the high-stakes event.

"But I got myself ready, got in the zone.

"I thought 'this was my chance, I need to do this'.

"Those last few shots were the most stressful shots I'd had. But I'd already made some mistakes in the final, I wasn't going to again."

Jones' 53 points in the women's skeet matched Morris's haul and meant she edged out good mate Chloe Tipple (49 spots) with Paris looming.

"It was nice to top the boys as well," she said.

"This is a hard one; I'm really good friends with Chloe and at the end of the day there's only one spot.

"I was happy with my own performance but a bit devastated we couldn't both have one."
