Australian PM Demands Accountability From Israel Over Aid Workers' Deaths

U.S. President Biden participates in a bilateral meeting with Australian PM Albanese, in San Diego

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed dissatisfaction with Israel's conclusions regarding the recent airstrike that resulted in the tragic deaths of seven aid workers, including Australian citizen Zomi Frankcom. The incident occurred as the aid workers were delivering food to those in need in Gaza on behalf of the World Central Kitchen charity.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attributed the airstrike to a misidentification, acknowledging a series of errors in assessments and decision-making that led to the targeting of the innocent aid workers. In response to the incident, the IDF has taken disciplinary actions, including the dismissal of two senior officers and the reprimand of a top commander.

Albanese emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the investigation, stating that the Australian public expects a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. In light of the global outrage sparked by the incident, the Australian government appointed retired Air Chief Marshall Mark Binskin as a special advisor to monitor Israel's response to the killings.

Albanese expressed his expectation that Binskin would receive full cooperation from the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli Government in his oversight role. The appointment of the special advisor underscores the seriousness with which Australia views the need for a comprehensive review of the events leading to the airstrike.
