Two-time major champion Petra Kvitová has made an early exit from the Australian Open, going down in straights sets to unseeded Anhelina Kalinina in the second round.
As rain wreaks havoc with the Australian Open schedule, Kvitová and Kalinina were playing under the roof on John Cain Arena, with the Ukrainian triumphing 7-5, 6-4.
Czech Kvitová, who reached the Australian Open final in 2019, was seeded 15 in the women's draw, but she was outclassed by the world number 39, who is making only her second appearance at Melbourne Park.
Earlier, world number one Iga Świątek stepped up her game to restore order with a more routine second-round win.
Persistent rain has meant there has been no play on the outside courts so far on Wednesday, while a host of matches need to be finished after being suspended last night.
The rain did not affect Świątek, however, as the world number one advanced to the last 32 with a resounding 6-2, 6-3 victory over Colombian Camila Osorio under the closed roof on Rod Laver Arena.
Świątek had to scrap her way back from a service break in the second set of her unconvincing tournament opener against Jule Niemeier on Monday night.
That was the Pole's first outing since suffering a crushing loss to Jessica Pegula at the season-opening United Cup, before withdrawing from the second Adelaide International with a shoulder issue.
The reigning French and US Open champion was still below her brilliant best for periods against Osorio, dropping serve three times, but at least looks to be slowly warming to the task as the Melbourne Park title favourite.
Świątek raced to an early 4-0 lead and broke Osorio six times in taking the match in one hour and 24 minutes.
The straight-sets victory set up a third-round meeting on Friday with either Canada's unseeded former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu or Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucșa.
Third-seeded Pegula defeated Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 7-6 (7/5), also on Rod Laver Arena.
Greece's sixth seed Maria Sakkari was given a scare in her match against Russian qualifier Diana Shnaider under Margaret Court Arena's roof, before winning in three sets.
Sakkari dropped the first set but rebounded to triumph 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a scratchy performance against the world number 106., with the match lasting two hours and 33 minutes.
In the men's draw, Italy's Jannik Sinner is the first through to the third round.
Taking advantage of the closed roof on John Cain Arena, the number 15 seed eased part Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Sinner has not dropped a set at this year's tournament, while he did not face a single break point against Etcheverry.
