Australian Olympic Team Administered Medication Against E.Coli Bacteria

Team administers E. coli medication as a precautionary measure.

Members of the Australian Olympic triathlon team have taken proactive measures to protect themselves against potential infections from E. coli bacteria in the water. The team's medical director, Carolyn Broderick, revealed that a month ago, they began administering medication effective against E. coli as a precautionary measure.

In addition to the medication, the Australian team has implemented further preventive measures such as prophylactic antibiotics, skin washes, ear washes, and eye washes to minimize the risk of infection. Broderick emphasized that they have consulted with infectious diseases experts to ensure they are taking appropriate steps to safeguard the athletes.

Concerns about water quality and potential infections arose after Belgium withdrew from the mixed relay triathlon race and Switzerland had to make changes to its roster due to athletes falling ill following the initial triathlon races. The specific illnesses affecting the athletes have not been disclosed by the Belgian Olympic committee, while the Swiss federation is uncertain if the infections are linked to the water quality of the Seine River.
