Rising Australian middle-distance star Ollie Hoare has smashed the Australian and Oceania indoor records with his winning effort in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York.
Hoare celebrated his 25th birthday in style, powering off the final bend to clock a winning time of three minutes 50.83 seconds.
The US-based runner had a break-out season in 2021, including an 11th-placed finish in the 1500m final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Olympic bronze medallist Josh Kerr from Britain was second in the Wanamaker Mile in 3:52.27 and American Colby Alexander was third.
"Going into the race I was extremely confident I could run fast," Hoare said.
"I wanted to get on the pace and be relaxed; I've been killing it in training so I wanted to bring that back in Millrose.
"When Josh passed me I was pretty surprised but I was confident I could go again.
"For me it was a great race. It was a nice birthday present."
Jessica Hull broke the Australian women's indoor mile record by clocking 4:24.06 to finish fourth in New York, in a race won by American Elle Purrier St Pierre.
