Katrina Powell has been appointed as Hockeyroos head coach on a permanent basis through to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Powell — who has an extensive coaching record — is the first female since Colleen Quinn in 1978 to hold the position.
She stepped into the role on an interim basis following Paul Gaudoin's resignation in the build-up to the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year.
Gaudoin had quit ahead of the release of a review into the culture of the Hockeyroos' program.
Powell coached the Hockeyroos at the Tokyo Olympics, where they exited the tournament in the quarter-finals following a shock 1-0 loss to India.
They had earlier won all of five their group stage matches.
Powell is regarded as a Hockeyroos great, having been a member of the gold medal-winning squads at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics.
"I'm really excited. Normally the Olympics is the end of a cycle but Tokyo felt like the start of something," Powell said in a Hockey Australia statement.
"With the time leading up to Paris being a shortened period, it feels like we have already started the work that needs to be done to be successful.
"The project of preparing for and competing in Tokyo was a huge challenge.
"Being a former elite hockey player, I know that is what high-performance athletes are looking for, that next challenge.
"The Tokyo Olympics proved to myself what I can get done in a short space of time, but it was made easier by the commitment and enthusiasm of the athletes."
Powell said she wanted the Hockeyroos to adopt a similar style of play to the great teams that won several Olympic and World Cup titles between 1988 and 2000.
"I've got really clear plans on where I want to see this team go," she said.
"Some of the group matches in Tokyo showed what is possible. There are a lot of talented players not only in the current Hockeyroos squad but who are knocking on the door.
"It is about providing players with opportunities through a structured framework of how we want to play but also a licence to take the game on.
"That's the traditional Australian way of playing — one that is attacking, wanting to take it to the opposition and defend stoutly.
Powell will relocate from Sydney to the Hockeyroos' Perth base.
Her major upcoming assignments as head coach include next year's World Cup and the Commonwealth Games.
