Australia star David Warner reveals he could retire from Test cricket after 2023 Ashes

Australia opener David Warner has revealed he may retire from Test cricket after next summer's Ashes series, admitting "it could be my last 12 months in Test cricket".

At the age of 36, Warner is the oldest player to hold a national contract with Cricket Australia and he has now spoken openly about his retirement plans following Australia's disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.

Speaking on Triple M's Deadset Legends, Warner revealed he may decide to focus solely on white-ball cricket following the 2023 Ashes, stating: "Test cricket will probably be the first one to fall off. Because that's how it will pan out.

"The T20 World Cup is in 2024, [50-over] World Cup next year. Potentially it could be my last 12 months in Test cricket. But I love the white-ball game; it's amazing."

Australia's ageing side came in for criticism after crashing out of the T20 World Cup at the Super 12 stage, with legendary opener Matthew Hayden among those suggesting they need to be "ruthless" and refresh a squad which included just two players under the age of 29.

"There has to be some freshness," said Hayden, who worked as a team mentor with finalists Pakistan at the World Cup. "And I think one of the great strengths of Australian cricket has been its ability to be able to recognise when to make that gear change into a different playing roster.

"I think full credit and respect has to go to the players that played this tournament, [they] certainly deserve to be there. A little bit like Mark Waugh giving away to someone like myself after World Cup campaigns, it's always been quite ruthless preparing for the next World Cup and they seemingly come around more often than not."

However, Warner issued a warning to those suggesting he and "a lot of those old people are past it", adding: "T20 cricket - I love the game. I will be looking to get to 2024.

"For all those people saying I am past it and a lot of those old people are past it, look out. Be careful what you wish for."
