Australia's most expensive house: Wingadal in Sydney is on the market for over $200 million

Wingadal, a luxurious waterfront home in Sydney, could be the first Australian house to sell for for over AUD $200 million (£104.8 million).

The four-bedroom house and separate two-bedroom apartment sits on a 98-metre-long stretch of harbour in the exclusive enclave of Wolseley Road on Point Piper — Australia’s most expensive street.

The record is currently held by another Point Piper home that reportedly sold for AUD $130 million (£68 million) in 2022 to tech billionaire Scott Farquhar.

Notable neighbours include actor Mark Wahlberg, who is reportedly staying in a multi-million-pound home on Point Piper while he shoots upcoming thriller Play Dirty.

Lachlan Murdoch, the Wimbledon-born chosen heir of Rupert Murdoch, is rumoured to be doing up a AUD $38.5 million (£20 million) boat shed in Point Piper. Former Australian prime minister also has a mansion in the area.

Wingadal was designed by Australian architect Alexander Tzannes and took eight years to build.

John Symond, founder of mortgage brokers Aussie Home Loans, bought the house in 1999.

“Wingadal has been a special home for my family over the past two decades, and now I’m looking forward to spending more time travelling overseas,” Symond said.

“While being an exceptional family home, we have also enjoyed hosting many important events for charities and other worthwhile causes”.

The house is certainly set up for extravagant entertainment.

Set over four storeys, the property’s internal entertaining areas reportedly have a capacity for 500 guests, with two commercial grade kitchens on site and a custom-designed wine cellar with room for 2,500 bottles.

It includes a swimming pool, naturally, along with a home theatre that seats 22 and undercover parking for 20 cars.

Covering 2,676 square metres of harbour front real esate, the site has views over Sydney Harbour.

Wingadal is listed with Ken Jacobs, Australia Pacific Director of Forbes Global Properties in association with Sydney agent Brad Pillinger.

Currently advertised as price on application, the agents are hopeful it will break records.

“Wingadal represents the unique vision of John Symond and is the most exciting listing I have worked on across four decades in the industry,” said Jacobs.

“The estate is Australia’s most iconic residence and ranks amongst the best in the world, combining both privacy and space, exuding elegance and comfort, while featuring gun barrel views of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.”

“There is no comparable property in Australia,” agreed Pillinger.

“We expect Wingadal will be the first sale to surpass the $200 million barrier in this country.”
