Australia backs Russia sports ban

Australia is imploring all international sporting organisations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing and to prevent the two nations from bidding to host events.

Sports Minister Richard Colbeck joined more than 30 countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Japan and a European bloc in calling on international sporting organisations to endorse three principles.

The collective agreed Russia and Belarus should not host, bid or be awarded any international sporting events; athletes, administrators and teams representing the countries should not be allowed to compete; and sponsorship and financial support from entities with state links be limited.

"Russia's unprovoked and unjustifiable war of choice against Ukraine, enabled by the Belarusian government, is abhorrent and a flagrant breach of its international obligations," the collective said in a statement.

"Respect for human rights and peaceful relations between nations form the foundation of international sport."

Sports and relevant legal bodies should refrain from sanctioning athletes, coaches and officials who decide to cancel their contracts with Russian, Belarusian or Ukrainian clubs, the collective says.

Additionally, the countries called for no sanctions to be applied to sports organisations that ban Russian athletes or teams.

"These restrictions should be in place until cooperation under the fundamental principles of international law has become possible again," the joint statement says.

"Furthermore, we encourage the international sport community to continue to show its solidarity with the people of Ukraine, including through supporting the continuation of Ukrainian sport where possible."
