Australia back Maxwell to fix batting woes

Australia will need star man Glenn Maxwell to snap out of his poor batting form if they are to defend their T20 World Cup crown, with one of his fast-bowling teammates backing him to do just that.

Maxwell, still viewed as the X-factor of the Australian batting card, cannot get anything going with the willow, having made just 16 runs in his last six innings at a tame average of 2.7.

He misfired in Wednesday night's loss to England, failing to find the boundary in his 11-ball eight as Australia's top order again struggled.

But if there is one T20 player you would back to turn it around it is the 33-year-old stalwart, something Josh Hazlewood gave voice to on Thursday morning.

"I've played a lot with Glenn lately, particularly (for Royal Challengers Bangalore) and obviously the Australian team, all three aspects of the game he's outstanding," Hazlewood told reporters.

"He's just that close to winning a game for us off his own bat or the ball, or in the field.

"He's a key part of our team and just adds that balance beautifully."

Hazlewood hoped Maxwell would not get bogged down playing a steady-hand while power-hitters Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David worked around him, instead encouraging the No.4 to play his shots.

"You don't want him going away from his natural instinct either," he said.

"He's a player that just reacts to what's coming and plays his game and that's the one thing you want from Glenn all the time.

"Having that depth of batters, they can just go out and (Maxwell can) play his game, whether it's in the first six overs or outside that against spin where in particular he's been destructive."

Australia have now lost back-to-back games to England, perhaps a worrying sign ahead of the sides meeting in a group-stage match at the World Cup on October 28.

One player who looks set to miss that clash is former skipper and gun bat Steve Smith, seemingly no longer part of the side's first-choice line-up.

Hazlewood said Smith's presence as a squad player was still vital, boosting the confidence of those picked in front of him.

"The top seven walk out and see Steve Smith on the bench, and it puts you in a pretty good position," he said.

"He's been fantastic around the group, still working really hard, putting pressure on the batters."
