Auston Trusty backed to make World Cup squad after on-loan Arsenal defender scores twice for Birmingham

Auston Trusty should “definitely” be in the USA’s World Cup squad in Qatar later this year, according to Birmingham boss John Eustace.

The on-loan Arsenal defender scored twice for the Championship side in their 3-0 win over Bristol City, the first goals he has scored in England football since moving from the MLS.

After joining Birmingham in the summer on a season-long loan move, Trusty has played every minute in the Championship for his new side and has made an immediate impression.

While the 24-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for his country, his club manager has urged the USA to take notice of Trusty’s performances and reward him with a place in the World Cup squad.

“He should be on that plane definitely,” said Eustace. “It’s definitely not too late.

“I’ve spoken to the US manager (Gregg Berhalter) and I have told him how well he is doing. It’s important they see that and understand he’s playing in one of the toughest leagues in Europe, week-in, week-out, against top players.

“I think they’ve watched a couple of games on video but I’ve told them to get the scouts out and watch him play. He (Berhalter) should come and watch him himself.”

It was announced in January that Arsenal had signed Trusty in a surprise move, though he remained with the Colorado Rapids until the summer when he arrived in north London for the first time.

Whether he gets the opportunity under Mikel Arteta in the future remains to be seen, but the praise from those at Birmingham could not be more glowing.

“He’s a special talent and he is going to be a top player going forward,” said Eustace.

“He’s getting better. He’s a young player who has come from the MLS into a very tough league in the Championship and he’s got good players around him.

“He’s in a good environment to develop and that’s what I want. The way he applies himself and his positive attitude is excellent and it rubs off on everyone.

“We’re very happy to have the player playing for Birmingham City and we’re very lucky to have him playing for us.”
