Austin powers Roar's ALM finals ambition

Brisbane Roar expect Charlie Austin to provide an avenue to goal and the extra noise that was lacking as they target an A-League Men's finals return.

The former English Premier League striker's arrival has been hard to miss in Brisbane ahead of Saturday's season opener against Macarthur FC in the side's return to Suncorp Stadium.

The 33-year-old striker hasn't shied away from offering advice to a side that was frustrated by an Australia Cup semi-final loss and scored just 29 goals in last year's ALM season.

"From the moment I spoke to him it wasn't about what he's done, it's about what he wants to do still," Moon said.

"He's got a hunger for the game, wants to do well from the Roar and he's been true to his word.

"He has shown he won't expect anything but the best standards and he's a positive character of the change room."

Moon took the Roar to fourth in his first season but they battled last year, winning only seven of 26 games to finish 11th.

Fit-again captain Tom Aldred has high hopes for the club's marquee man.

"He comes with a huge pedigree ... scored goals in the Premier League but without even talking about what he does on the pitch he brings that experience and pedigree to the change room," he said.

"That is what we didn't have last year. We lacked experience and we lacked voices. Hopefully he hits the ground running and scores goals.

"A club like Brisbane we should be aiming at getting in the six for sure; we want to be in the finals at the end of the season."

Moon said he and the squad were still filthy after a 3-2 extra time loss to Sydney United 58 in the Australia Cup semi-final when they led twice against the NPL club and had the bulk of possession.

"You won't ever get over those kind of games," Moon said.

"There's still days in my playing career I still think about at night.

"You can't not look at how that turned out and the opportunity that was missed but we have to move on and congratulations to them (Australia Cup champions Macarthur).

"I certainly hope they've had a long party, all week long celebrating that result."
