Aussies settle Games table tennis team

Seven-time Paralympian Danni Di Toro has always been a tad jealous when watching the Commonwealth Games.

Di Toro has competed on the international circuit since 1989 and at the Paralympics since 1996.

But the Commonwealth Games was a missing piece in her esteemed sporting career, until now.

Di Toro, who was co-captain of Australia's Paralympic team at last year's Tokyo Games, is among a six-strong Australian Para table tennis team selected for the debut of the sport at a Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July-August.

"I have loved watching the Commonwealth Games from afar during my sporting career," Di Toro said.

"It's amazing that I now have the opportunity to be on the Australian team in Birmingham.

"It's awesome to have both the Para and able-bodied team members unified in the one Australian team and being in the same villages and sharing stories and experiences with one another at the Games."

Di Toro, Amanda Tscharke, Lin Ma, Qian Yang, Junjian (Jessy) Chen and Lina Lei have been selected on Australia's Para table tennis team announced on Monday.

And able bodied players Chunyi (Tracy) Feng and Xin (Chris) Yan were also added to number 14 athletes in Birmingham.

The Para table tennis contingent will travel carrying genuine gold medal ambitions - Lin Ma, Qian Yang and Lina Lei have a combined haul of 23 Paralympic medals.

Qian Yang and Lina Lei claimed gold medals at last year's Paralympics and and Lin Ma won silver in Tokyo.

The eight newcomers to the team named on Monday follow six selections announced last month, including able bodied veteran Jian Fang Lay, who will compete at her sixth Commonwealth Games.

Min Hyung Jee, Yangzi Liu, Dillon Chambers, Nicholas Lum and Finn Luu make up the rest of the Australian table tennis team.
