Aussies advance in El Salvador as busy end awaits

Ethan Ewing is through to the round of 16 at the World Surf League stop in El Salvador. (HANDOUT/World Surf League)

Australians Ethan Ewing and George Pittar have advanced to the round of 16 at the stop-start World Surf League event in El Salvador.

Action got under way at Punta Roca on April 2 but poor conditions have resulted in multiple lay days.

The window for the event runs until Saturday (local time), with surfers then facing a short turnaround before the next stop begins at Bells Beach on Good Friday.

Molly Picklum and Isabella Nichols' long wait for their respective quarter-finals continued on Thursday, when the women's competition was on standby.

But Ewing produced a score of 13.23 to defeat American Levi Slawson (11.13) while Pittar pipped compatriot Jack Robinson, 13.5 to 13.17.

Italian Leonardo Fioravanti produced Thursday's highest score (15.97) to oust Australian Ryan Callinan.

Ewing will face Brazilian Joao Chianca for a spot in the quarter-finals, while Pittar's next clash is with American Crosby Colapinto.
