Aussie surfing septet made to wait in El Salvador

Isabella Nichols is making a family sacrifice to compete in the World Surf League's El Salvador leg. (HANDOUT/World Surf League)

The prospect of Isabella Nichols making her sister's wedding receded further after another day's delay in the World Surf League's El Salvador leg kept her on the beach at Punta Roca.

The Queenslander's boilover victory over event favourite Caroline Marks on Monday left her admitting, tearfully, that it meant she was unlikely to be able to make her sibling's big day.

After inconsistent and broken swell led to Tuesday's competition being called off without a rider hitting the waves her schedule tightened even more.

When the surfers do get into action the men's last 16 heat will take place first, with five Australians in the mix.

Ethan Ewing goes first, in heat five, followed by Joel Vaughan, then Jack Robinson and George Pittar up against each other, and Ryan Callinan.

That will be followed by the women's quarter-finals in which Nichols takes on Hawaii's Bettylou Sakura Johnson, who defeated Australia's two-time world champion Tyler Wright in the last 16, and Molly Picklum faces Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy.

A relief for all is that there is a big swell on its way to the Pacific coast venue.

"Today is the slowest and smallest day of the window so far, and really weak surf too," said Renato Hickel, WSL Deputy Commissioner. "We've been monitoring sets. Usually every half an hour there is one good wave, so we opt to wait. Tomorrow is our last chance to run anything before the big swell.

"Today, we have the good news that this big swell will probably come bigger than first anticipated, could be on a ten-foot mark. We're hopeful and excited to see the swell already showing this coming Thursday early morning. We have the last three days of the window to wrap the event up."
