Aussie slammed for 'criminal' ranking of British supermarkets as major shop gets missed

Much like any other country, us Brits enjoy cultural quirks that often leave foreign visitors bewildered. Things can get even more confusing when you drill down to regional preferences - like ordering your chips with curry sauce or gravy, or how you pronounce the word 'scone'. These seemingly small tastes can prove to be rather tribal amongst the British public - ask a group of people what biscuit they favour and all hell with break loose.

Another opinion that divides the country is which of our much-loved supermarkets reign supreme. Whether you're a die-hard Aldi fan or an M&s shopper, the battle for top-tier supermarket status rumbles on. This debate becomes even more territorial when a non-Brit decides to weigh in on the topic, something which one woman quickly realised when she posted her 'criminal' British supermarket ranking online.

Rhiannon Cunningham, an Australian who has lived in Britain for four years, confidently gave her followers the low-down on her favourite food shops, only to be ruthlessly ridiculed for her views.

Taking to TikTok to share her opinion, Rhiannon, who posts under the name @ rhiannon.cunningham on the platform, gave her back-story ahead of delivering her rankings, in the hope that her British followers would respect her view on the matter.

At the beginning of the video, where she speaks to the camera, the young woman says: "OK so this is me ranking all the British supermarkets and I've been in this country for four years now, so I think I've earned myself the right".

The writing on top of the clip reads "Ranking UK supermarkets (as an Australian)" with a numbered list running from 1-8 that eventually gets filled out throughout the video, as the woman explains why each supermarket earned its allocated spot.

Working from worst to best, the Aussie declares Co-op as the worst supermarket in the UK, boldly stating that she "f***ing hates it".

"Co-op never has anything you need, but for some reason they are absolutely everywhere. And I just don't understand why," she continues.

"I would go in for the simplest thing like a loaf of bread and they just won't have any that day. They never have what I need when I want it."

Next up is Waitrose, which the woman awards seventh place thanks to its up-market prices. "I don't appreciate a supermarket that costs £5 to even breathe in there".

Lidl secures sixth place after Rhiannon mixes up the budget store with Aldi, before questioning whether Lidl stores "even exist" as she's never shopped in one.

Then Morrisons makes an appearance, landing fifth after the Aussie confesses that she was a "Morrisons girl" when she first moved to the UK.

Continuing to suggest that it's "embarrassing" to shop in Morrisons, the young woman added "I just don't understand Morrisons. What are you? What are you trying to be? Who made you? Is there really a need for you? Who are you actually competing with?".

Iconic budget supermarket Aldi then enters the list at fourth place - a decision which Rhiannon accepts may be "controversial" owing to its beloved status in the UK.

She blames the mid-range ranking on long queuing times in the supermarket, dubbing it as "just not good enough".

As things start to heat up in the rankings, she warns viewers that her third place supermarket "does not deserve to be up this high" but explains that it has always been her local.

Sainsbury's has remained a loyal favourite for Rhiannon, as she says: "I honestly know every single aisle. I know the layout of every single Sainsbury's. It's always the same," before adding "Sainsbury's is low-key my comfort store despite me low-key hating it".

Second place goes to M&S, as according to the Aussie, the pricey goods are worth it thanks to their high quality.

She explains: "Marks & Spencers is expensive but for good reason. Their ready-made meals and stuff are so freaking good".

"I'm not rich by any means, but I will still shop at M&S purely because the quality is just there and you can fight me on that."

After joking that Asda made the top spot before clarifying that it didn't make the list because she's "never step foot in one", Rhiannon proceeds to award Tesco as the supermarket winner - much to many viewers' dismay.

She says: "They just have the best range. Such good prices. Whenever there's a new range I want to try it's always featured in Tesco first".

The only downfall of her favourite store is its Clubcard system, according to Rhiannon, as despite shopping there regularly she still doesn't have one.

The controversial list has left many Brits outraged, with thousands fleeing to the comments section on the video to complain about the choices - all of which Rhiannon strongly sticks to.

Many disgruntled shoppers complained that Asda didn't make the cut, with one commenting: "You rated co-op and not Asda??!" and another adding "try an ASDA please. I find Tesco cost more than ASDA".

Others defended Co-op, arguing that it "has super high-quality food" as well as "good wine, and nice crisps and cheese".

Many commenters disagreed with Tesco being awarded the top spot, with one saying: "totally wrong Tesco 1st? no way".

A few TikTok users agreed with the Aussie's opinion, applauding the order of her list. One said: "very solid list this" while another added: "I agree with every single thing u [sic] said".

The video has certainly divided opinions, as it has garnered more than 880,000 views so far. Despite the criticisms, Rhiannon insists that her opinion is "final" and "right".
