Merry Christmas to everyone except landlords, as a new report has (unsurprisingly) found that renters are thousands of dollars worst off this Christmas than they were this time last year.
Somebody please keep me away from the eggnog, or else I’m gonna get extremely political at the family Christmas lunch when I start ranting about the fact that YES RENT IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE.
And no, Mum, I’m not complaining like an “entitled renter“.
In fact, I’m backed up by a new report from the Everybody’s Home group, who analysed the weekly asking rent data in Australia’s capital cities. The data showed that in some cities renters are being asked for as much as $3,600 more a year.
So uhh, where’s your sources then, hypothetical family member I’m arguing with?
Across the nation’s capitals in 2024, renters in units paid $1,084.72 more on average than what they paid in 2023. Meanwhile the average cost of renting a home in a capital city rose by $1,593.28.
The most expensive surge was for units in Adelaide, which rose by a whopping $69.89 per week to rent.
As for Sydney, the usual suspect when it comes to stories about exponentially skyrocketing rents, the annual cost to rent a unit and house rose by $388.96 and $1,107.60 respectively.
To get a full look at exactly how much rents rose in Australia, check out this convenient table below.
But no, I guess I’m just being a whining young person who doesn’t understand that I should be thankful for my landlord graciously providing me with housing. Ugh.
Anyway. If you’re looking for somewhere to rent that went down in cost over the last 12 months, then here’s a tip:
Move overseas.
