Star quick Mitchell Starc has become just the seventh Australian to take 300 Test wickets.

The tall left-armer joined an illustrious group of bowlers, including Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, by reaching the milestone against South Africa in Brisbane on Sunday.

Entering the match needing four wickets to bring up 300, Starc took three wickets during the first-innings to be stranded on 299 before Australia batted.

However, Australia were rolled for 218 in just 50 overs, with South Africa back in to bat before lunch on day two.

It allowed Starc to get another crack at his milestone and he brought up 300 with a classic in-swinger to bowl Proteas No.3 Rassie van der Dussen for a duck.

Starc has prioritised international cricket, turning down the riches on offers in the Indian Premier League.

A combination of injury and workload has led to Starc skipping the lucrative T20 tournament since 2015 when he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, missing out on millions of dollars.

While conceding missing the IPL for so many years had "not been great for the back pocket", Starc said it had helped him stay fresh to perform for Australia.

"If I look at the last couple of years of Test cricket, that decision has certainly helped it," he said on Thursday.
