Aussie driver Doohan won't dwell on 'brutal' F1 crash

Jack Doohan won't waste any time dwelling on his Australian Grand Prix disaster after the Formula One rookie crashed out in the opening lap.

The Gold Coast product lost control of his Alpine car shifting gears on the way to turn six at Albert Park and went spinning into the barrier.

Wet weather had not helped his case, with Doohan admitting the day before he had not driven Alpine machinery in the rain.

The 22-year-old, who started from 14th, was not the only victim of the biting Albert Park track.

Rookie Isack Hadjar crashed his Racing Bulls car in the formation lap before the race start, causing a 15-minute delay.

Williams star Carlos Sainz then lost his rear end and went into the wall at the final corner of the first lap.

It was Doohan's first race as a full-time F1 driver after making his debut in last season's finale at Abu Dhabi.

Already turning his attention to next weekend's race in Shanghai, Doohan refused to be disheartened.

Advice from dad and MotoGP legend Mick, who watched from the Alpine garage, has only helped his spirits.

"He had many times where he was scraping along the ground at much higher speeds than me as well so at the end of the day, I'm just going to have to learn to accept this," Doohan said.

"I've got no better person in my corner that has been through that and been through these tough times.

"It's my first shunt in one of these Formula One cars. I'm sure it won't be the last. It's a brutal way to have it, but it happens.

"I didn't want it to happen, but it has. I've accepted it and I'm not really looking for excuses.

"I made this mistake and I accept it, and I look forward to just bouncing back."

Doohan was already under pressure heading into the season opener, after highly-rated Argentine talent Franco Colapinto signed on as a reserve driver for Alpine.

Should Doohan or his teammate Pierre Gasly struggle early in the season, Colapinto is a ready-made replacement.

Doohan, who is off-contract at the end of this season, remained focused on his on-track performance.

"Each and every time I'm in the car, I want to enjoy it," Doohan said.

"Each time I get to hop into these machines, it's a privilege.

"I look forward to many more home grands prix and to the rest of the seasons."
