Australians have long been known for our coffee snobbery and we tend to be pretty unapologetic about the deep love for the perfect brew. Whether it’s sipping on a flat white or experimenting with new techniques, we take their coffee seriously — and it should be no surprise then that one Australian cafe has pipped the list of the 100 best in the world.
In what probably marks a big win for Australian coffee culture, Toby’s Estate in Sydney has been named The World’s Best Coffee Shop at the inaugural World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops Gala in Madrid, Spain.
The flagship café and roastery in Chippendale beat out numerous competitors from across the globe, securing the top spot in a competition that looked at everything from coffee quality and barista experience to innovation and customer service.

The brand also has locations in Melbourne, Brisbane, Singapore, Middle East, the Philippines. (Source: supplied)
And for those who love a good brew on their travels, the rest of the top 10 cafes in the world comprised of:
- Onyx Coffee LAB, USA
- Gota Coffee Experts, Austria
- Proud Mary Coffee, Australia
- Tim Wendelboe, Norway
- Apartment Coffee, Singapore
- Kawa, France
- Coffee Anthology, Australia
- Story of Ono, Malaysia
- Tropicalia Coffee, Colombia
You might note here that Toby’s Estate wasn’t the only Aussie cafe to make waves, with Proud Mary in Melbourne and Coffee Anthology in Brisbane also nabbing spots in the top 10 of the world. They came in at 4th and 8th place respectively.

And we’re equally chuffed to note the other Australian coffee shops made the cut in the top 100 list:
- Veneziano Coffee Roasters (#19, Melbourne)
- Calere Cafe (#28, Melbourne)
- Exchange Coffee (#37, Adelaide)
- Fonzie Abbott (#70, Brisbane)
- Vacation Coffee (#71, Melbourne)
- Seven Seeds (#81, Sydney)
Jody Leslie, general manager for Toby’s Estate, said in a statement the cafe’s beyond thrilled with the new accolade.
“At Toby’s Estate, coffee is at the heart of everything we do, and I think that’s reflected in our customer’s experience,” she said.
“Our whole team puts in an immense amount of effort to make the best coffee possible, so we’re absolutely delighted to be awarded this incredible recognition.”

Responding to the news on Instagram, Melbourne’s Proud Mary also it was “grateful to be listed alongside so many great shops” and gave a big shoutout to the team, producers, and customers.
In case you were wondering, this inaugural list implemented public voting — allowing coffee enthusiasts from around the world to cast their votes online — alongside an expert panel of experts such as baristas, coffee roasters, and industry professionals, who made up more than half of the final scores.
Now, we know not everyone’s going to be happy — probably quite a few faves missing on this list? — but it’s still a pretty good showing from the Aussies!
