Australia's Kimberly Birrell has missed the chance to take on fourth seed Caroline Garcia in round two of the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara, Mexico.
A day after compatriot Olivia Radecki set up a clash with second-seeded American Danielle Collins, 26-year-old Birrell was beaten 6-4 7-6 (7-4) by Ena Shibahara.
Birrell, the world No.150, capitalised on four of her nine break point opportunities during the one hour 41-minute contest, while her Japanese opponent broke five times from as many chances.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Martina Trevisan settled a score against eighth-seeded Caroline Dolehide with a 6-3 6-2 win.
Trevisan, who lost to Dolehide a year ago in the Guadalajara quarter-finals, will next play local favourite Renata Zarazua.
"Today I came to the court with a lot of energy," Trevisan said.
"For me maybe it was revenge and tomorrow I must be ready for Renata. I have played twice against her this year. I know her very well."
Marie Bouzkova beat Alexandra Eala 6-2 6-2 to advance to a second-round match against Lucrezia Stefanini, who ousted Ana Sofía Sanchez 6-0 3-6 6-2.
The sixth-seeded Bouzkova made the semis in Guadalajara a year ago before losing to eventual champion Maria Sakkari.
Ashlyn Krueger defeated Tatjana Maria 7-5 6-2 and will next face Magdalena Frech, a 6-4 6-4 winner over Emina Bektas.
